A trigger point is a painful hyperirritable spot most commonly found in the belly of the muscle, in layman's terms, a knot. Trigger Point Therapy utilizes static pressure on the trigger point to release the knot and restore the area to health. When the therapist finds a trigger point, static pressure is applied to the knot until the first hint of pain is reported by the client. Pressure is held until the pain subsides, pressure is increased to the first hint of pain and held until the pain recedes again. With each subsequent application of pressure the knot is being relaxed. After several increases the pressure is finally released quickly allowing blood to flush the area.
